Back in the 70s I worked in a garage that done brakes and front end work, this was a big name company. Every new brake drum that was bought was suppose to be turned to true it up and we had a machine you put the new shoes on and ground them down, you would be surprised of the high spots on a set of new shoes, looked like you was taking a lot off but it was just the high spots that you was removing. I have test drove cars without turning drum and truing up the shoes and then turned them and trued them up. Big, big difference in bounce and stopping ability.
