I guess it depends on how quick you want to get there. Nothing wrong with a DT...... but you'll probably get a good bit more power from an L10 or M11. Transmissions... 9's 10's, 13's. They're all good. A 13 will cost more, and is more versatile. A 10 or super 10 would be good too. It's as much a matter of your own personal preference. If it were me, I'd be looking for an old fleet spec highway tractor. They often have smallish engines (read fuel economy), and super 10 tranny's. They're out there cheap and in well maintained condition because the fleet maintenance is generally good... and nobody wants the trucks. 10 grand should get you a very good light tractor. Probably cost you less than a single axle, and not really much more to run. Just find something that fits what you want to do, and not be too hung up on the nameplate. I would stay with either a DT466 if you go that route, or in a larger truck, either a Cummins, Cat or Detroit engine. There's lots of Mercedes engines popping up now, and Volvo's, and probably some other Euro stuff... but watch out on them as they're not so widely supported, and probably a bit dearer to work on.... not that they aren't very good engines. There isn't too many places you can't come across either a Cummins or Cat shop. We've got one of each in town, and damn little else anymore. Good luck. Rod Rod

But alas, my carb foiled me again, it would fire a second then flood out. After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga
