I USE A 10hp CHIPPER-SHREDDER (SEARS BRAND MADE BY TROY-BUILT).YOU CAN CHOP STRAW FIRST (THROUGH A 1 3/4"SCREEN;) OR CHOP WASTE/STRAW AFTER USE WITH A BAR GRATE SCREEN. (THIS MAKES THE CHIPPER DIRTY IF YOU USE IT FOR CRACKING CORN).THIS CHIPPER-SHREDDER HAS REMOVABLE SCREENS.CAN EVEN CRACK CORN (WITH A SMALL 3/4" SCREEN.)WITH A 1 3/4" SCREEN THE STRAW IS ABOUT 2" OR SMALLER;GREAT FOR BEDDING AND EASY TO SPREAD ALSO. REMOVAL FOR GARDEN USE IS EASY TOO.IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO A HAMMER MILL/FEED GRINDER(PTO OR BELT TYPE)THAT WOULD BE FASTER.YOU COULD CHOP A LARGE AMOUNT IN A SHORT TIME. I CHOP 6 BALES AT A TIME AND PUT IT IN A BIN;FOR TWO HORSES AND GOATS. ( AND RABBITS IN THE WINTER).THE CHIPPER SHREDDER IS SLOWER THAN A HAMMER-MILL/FEED GRINDER(PTO/BELT DRIVEN TYPE)BUT I HAVE THE BENEFIT OF BEING ABLE TO CHIP BRANCHES;CRACK CORN (FOR CHICKENS/GEESE),MULCH LEAVES/ETC, WITH IT ALSO. IT TILLS UNDER GOOD AND COMPOSTS READILY ALSO . .....HOPE THIS HELPS.
