Ivan is correct with his analysis. I had a MF that from new had that problem. If you want to see inside the trans get a turn signal socket with two wires (no ground through the socket) and wire the bulb to where you can drop it in thru the fill hole. You will be amazed how well it lights up the inside to let you see which gear needs to be shifted. The true fix is a different story. I have been told that MF made two designs of the shift lever end that goes in the shift mechanism. I have only seen one, the round ended one. The other design is supposedly more square on the end. The squared end lets you start shifting into one part of the mechanism before it leaves the area it originally occupied thus keeping everything in alignment. The ball being round lets the shift mechanism move around because it has only one minute point of contact and as you shift the area is not held in alignment. You can observe this with the light a lot better than I can explain it. My fix was to weld the ball into a more squarish design but with the leading and trailing edges still rounded a little.
