I would look at fuel return hoses.The problem you describe of sucking air is typical of that era yanmar.In that it is a closed system this is the area of most concern,also due to engine heat hose becomes dry and does not seal as well. I agree with earlier post as to pressure checking fuel system. Sometimes though you still may not visually identify problem. It is not a bad idea to replace those return hoses anyway it might cost all of five dollars.The only other area to check would be filter.I have seen small cracks in the casting of filter head when tightend just a little too much, it happens.
