There are dumb ideas and dumb people but there never was a dumb question. If the throttle lever is down to the way slow position it shouldn't be a problem. If you wanted to be really conservative you could somehow block off the air inlet, like the 2 stroke Jimmy engines do for emergency stop. There are stories about people barring over diesels and having them start, but if any of that's true they must have been cranking the old wrench pretty vigorously.
