I have a Ford 3000 Diesel with a brand new starter installed by the F/NH dealer when I bought it (1 week ago). It was 30 degrees out so I gave the tractor a sniff of strating fluid to start it up. I cranked it over the forst time and it ran for a few seconds than stopped (normal) I then gave it a tiny sniff of ether and cranked it over again. This time the starter clicked on and started to zing! Did not engage the engine and ran continuously. I turned the key to the off position and even pressed the auxiliary started buttong a few times but the starter would not turn off! I immediately ran to the starter and tried to loosen the battery cable but the nut was too tight to loosen by hand so I ran to the car and happened to have a huge adjustable wrench which I loosened the battery lead with, but ended up breaking the lead terminal on the wire. This obviously stopped the starter. When I touched the battery cable back to the battery it had a large spark still, but the starter did not turn immediately. This is with the key out and the button not pressed. So what could cause the starter to run continously, not engaged to the engine and not turn off even with the key in the off position? This just happened this morning and I want to get some advice before I accidently fry myself on an apparently constantly charged electrical system. Thanks
