I can't address your Ford specifically but I'll throw in something to check. You wrote, "the starter clicked on." The click says you have a solenoid. Is the solenoid mounted on the starter so it appears to be a part of the starter? In this case what you did was disconnect the battery side of the solenoid. The problem you report can only be caused by a failure to disconnect the battery from the starter. This would indicate 'stuck' starter switch or solenoid contacts. The solenoid could be held up by the control circuit. Check backward from the starter toward the battery to see what is holding the battery to the starter lug.
