Prelube the engine before you first start it. If nothing else, disconnect the hot lead to the coil and then crank the engine until you have oil pressure. I assume you will have set the valve lash cold as best you can. If you haven't already done so, be sure the thermostat in the cooling system is new. Then hook the ignition up, when the engine starts let it sit at high idle while you check for leaks and mistakes, shutting things down if and as necessary. Hopefully you won't have to. After about half an hour of that, shut it down and change the oil and filter. Be sure the distributor timing is where it needs to be, and that the carburetor is set right. Then operate it at varying load, something short of full power, for maybe 10 hours or so. It's a good idea to retorque the head gasket, and intake/exhaust gaskets if used. Check the valve lash when the engine is hot, if that's when it's supposed to be checked. After that the rings ought to be seated enough that if everything else is okay, you can go to it. Others may disagree with the times involved, but that general approach has worked for me.
