Your decription of the wireing doesnt make sence to me.But if your burning points and you have a resistor in line its either one of two things,the resrsitor is bad or youy dont have the resistor in the right place.I beleive someone else commented on that as well.Make sure the resistor is on the + side of the coil,meaning it should be in line on the wire that goes into the coil on from the switch.
