JD model 40 burning points

I have a 53 model 40 JD burning the points. The wiring is like the book + battery ground - in coil + to distributor. I have used 6 volts & 12 volts battery with a resitor. New, points, condenser, spark plugs, wirws 6 & 12 volts coils, generator & lights disconnected. I get the motor set up running & it will run for 5 to 10 minutes under a load of a bush hog then start skipping. Checking the points they will be burned, Any suggestions.
