If the ground polarity were reversed, then the coil leads would need to be reversed. The coil has positive and negative connections. On a positive ground system, the positive terminal connects to the distributor. On a negative ground system, the negative terminal connects to the distributor. The low voltage passes through the points and grounds out through the distributor itself. Sometimes a distributor will cause problems by not making a good ground contact. As for the high voltage, it grounds out through the spark plugs to the engine block. The plugs fire when this high voltage jumps the gap on them as it passes to ground. I still think that it sounds like the main problem on this tractor is the fact that the ballast resistor is hooked up on the wrong side of the coil. That and at times he is running a twelve volt battery on a six volt system. The electrical components should be matched to work together.
