Actually, I just recommisioned an old highway tractor on the weekend. She sat where she was parked for 2 years with a twisted frame. It got parked there the first week of December, '04. I was so disgusted, I just got out and left it. Scrap. Checked nothing.

Checked the oil and antifreeze the other day, put her on the block heater, cleaned all the cable connections and stuck 2 new batteries in the box, and another big set of booster cables bolted to the other truck to help. Fill the fuel filter(Cummins) and dump 5 gallons in the saddle tank.... crank and off she went. This just went too good. Had to try the clutch. Oh boy, it's not stuck. Try the gears. Yep, they all work. Got some air up, release the maxi's... Well, only 2 drums are stuck. Lock the power divider and tug.... Rocked her about 5 times back and forth, and the drums released. What the heck, I'm going for a joyride..... Mind you, this old junk sat for 2 years without so much as being turned over.

I think some people overthink the storage part of old tractors. I wouldn't exactly recomend what I did to that old truck.... but for a short period of time, it'll be just fine all by it's lonesome. Just cover the exhaust so it doesn't get water in, and make sure the antifreeze is up to par for your climate. Check all the fluid levels before you recommision the thing.
