Junk email question ......

Every time I go into my Outlook Express I download a large number of junk emails. They are commercial advertisements selling everything from wristwatches to holiday trips and everything inbetween. The advertisements seem to be coming from individuals, probably much like myself. Just regular types of email addresses. How is this stuff being routed within the system into my computer?
