When you tipped the transformer back, several things could have happened: 1.) Air blows out by the transformer, and there is less air to the burnerhead, so it's easier the light the fuel as the transformer is tipped back. 2.) There could have been a flake of carbon shorting out the electrodes, and moving things around could have dislodged the carbon, or making the spark gap back near the transformer could have caused the carbon to be "zapped" off of the electrodes. The electrodes could be worn, or out of adjustment, or the air could be out of adjustment, or the nozzle could be partially clogged, making a poor spray pattern that carbons up the electrodes. Also, a WEAK ignition transformer can cause "fits". Yeah, I know it looked like a lot of spark to you, however, it still could be weak.
