If this was my problem,I would discuss it with a local bearing supply house. In view of your intention to support the extension with two pillar blocks,I would purchase one of them fitted with a double thrust ball or roller bearing set up. Then join the shafts with a flexible coupling. There are any number of mgf.of these available such as made by Falk or Waldren.Any of them should give years of trouble free service. This type coupling usually operates with an air gap between faces. This will do away with possible whip in the shaft extension. If you go this route make sure to drill the pillar blocks thru and into the base plate and install tapered dowel pins once the proper alignment has been established. This will insure against possible shifting and misalignment in service. The bearing and coupling supplier can fit the coupling to shaft and keyways.
