We had an ice storm in 1998 that shut the power off for 8 days.A friend had a 2 cylinder Onan 5000 watt generator. He wanted some thing that was easier to store and move around. He set a price of 400.00.I gave him some cash and paid off the rest by sawing his fire wood, with eggs etc.Anyone who can afford a PC can afford a small generator.I used the generator to keep my freezer cold, run the oil furnace. Also kept the local post office going and several houses from freezing up.I had built a cart for the Onan because its heavy.3 of us loaded it in to my pickup. The generator has an electric fuel pump so it can draw fuel from a boat tank or a car, truck,or tractor tank.A smoker can spend 1825.00 per year on cigaretts.Any one who has 1 old tractor has at least 2 grand in it.I have had a welder handy for 50 years. I would have bought a gas powered welder/ac generator if I didnt have 2 ac welders. Some people were without power for over 30 days during the 98 ice storm.Only one FM radio did good coverage during the storm. The rest were off the air or went on with the some old format. Many people were out of food in 2 days.I have two wood fired stoves in the house, and wood in the shed. Many people who were able to get generators were trying to sell them once power came back on.The power when out again for two more days.I saw pickup trucks go by filled with new generators.I was taught to be ready for storms by my mom and dad.The roads were not plowed for 2 weeks in 1948 were I grew up.A good stock of food that wont freeze should be kept if you dont have a generator.A friend has a generator, 3 wind mills, a solar panel, a battery bank and a wood stove in his house.Ive heard of people who have electric can openers that go hungry when they have canned goods on hand.Every kid had a boy scout pocket knife with a can opener when I was growing up.I have a wood fired cook stove along with an electric stove in the kitchen. If the power goes off I drain the barn water line.I fill my wood box and feed the livestock in day light hours. If power is off for long I fire up the stove in the living room.If the roads are not plowed I have plenty of food put away.I dont run to a shelter, there isnt one out here anyway. My mother and dad would have a good laugh over people leaving their homes because the electric was down.I still have my mothers oil lamp on the shelf full of kerosene.I have a 5 gallon can of kerosene handy.I have several kerosene lanterns ready for use. These preparations dont cost that much money but you must have the common sense to get ready.

Usin Your Implements: Bucket Loader - by Curtis Von Fange. Introduction: Dad was raised during the depression years of the thirties. As a kid he worked part time on a farm in Kansas doing many of the manual chores. Some of the more successful farmers of that day had a new time saving device called a tractor. It increased the farm productivity and, in general, made life easier because more work could be done with this 'mechanical beast'. My dad dreamed that some day he would have his own tractor with every implement he could get. When he rea
