I run the numbers every once in a while since I have a "Joe job" and skills that should let me be self-employed. I figure it would take at least 50% more gross income to make up for the lost fringe benefits that come with working for someone else. One of the things I notice about self-employed people is that they can't be satisfied with working for someone else - the ability to control everything about their work has to be worth something substantial to them. Plus, some of them would be unemployable due to personality or ego issues.
