Yup that's about the only time a differential lock is valuable--when your stuck. You have a chance to get out, or else busted. That smoke is normal. I have an 1855 Oliver that has that fuel smoke all the time. Put under a light load it disappears, get a real good load, like say a 13 foot disc and a 15 foot rolling harrow in soft ground and that smoke is BLACK. Shoot a 12 foot Great Plains drill will load her up good. By the way the 1855 and the 4020 were competitors.
