COFLY: I'd humbly tell him that I thought it might be more than I'd be able to help him with. Suggest to him that he take it to the local dealer and get an idea of what happened. My local dealer will come pick up a tractor if you ask em - so he might go that route. Either way, now is a good time of year to have a mower looked at versus early April! You could suggest that if it is not a serious repair then you'd certainly be glad to assist - just get a pro to give him a diagnosis. If the diagnosis is bad then just have the dealer go ahead and repair it - or trade it in on the spot for another. That's what I'd do.
