supper isn't a southern thang. i grew up in northern indiana and supper was the evening meal. "dinner" was something we only had on sunday...a big meal in the middle of the afternoon and then no supper, just a snack or something left over from dinner if you got hungry in the evening. the rest of the week it was breakfast, lunch, and supper. here in the south, lunch is called dinner...but mostly it seems it refers to a time of day. when you ask when someone will be in or something will be done the answer is always either before or after dinner...there is no numbered time down here like..."around two o'clock"...that's just referred to as "after dinner". took me a while to get used to that.
