The 420 was made in the late '50s, not long before the end of the 2-cylinder era. It ran at a higher RPM than the older "Popping Johnnys", which translated into a smoother running motor, which translates into a smoother-running PTO. Some of the 420s have power steering, a bonus on a long day. I agree with the gentleman's point that a 4 or 6 cylinder motor does run more smoothly than a 2 cylinder motor. BTW, a cantankerous, spluttering 2 banger means the tractor needs to be tuned. I've seen many excellent choices named in this thread.
