Gathering scattered firewood in heavy cover

A MNR work crew has just finished two weeks in our woodlot thinning a 15 acre stand of maple and walnut. Much of what they cut was ironwood, hickory and stunted hard maple. The problem I inherit is finding a way to collect a vast quantity of the small-diameter, 4' chunks of wood which they left where they fell. Yesterday we moved some of the larger logs with a 3pt hitch skidding attachment on a 100 hp tractor. That worked very well. I'm wondering if there would be any way to adapt a cable skidder to pick up a large number of smaller pieces of wood and bring them to the road from 150' away? The stand is still quite dense with young growth. I used to haul out small quantities of wood in the box of my golf cart, but I don't think I want to put the current machine through that kind of abuse. I'll probably pick away at the wood with a long, very narrow, tri-axle trailer behind my Massey 30.
It will back into some pretty tight spots without damage. Any better ideas?
