As said below you can check the pressure of the fluid instead of the air just remember it takes the fluid longer to fill the gauge so you have to hold it on the stem longer. When you have the tire up to the pressure you want then put the gauge in clean water and pull the stem out several times. Put the gauge up and then throw it away the next time you go to use it. You can buy liqud gauged, they are the same except they are spring loaded to push the fluid out. But if they aren't used regular they go bad. So buy a throw away gauge to start with.
