I am a Tool and die maker so I do all my own checking. I have also been a Mechanic for a number of my earlier years and I still do all my work. I have heard of people checking wear with a new piston ring. They did this by pushing the ring down to the bottom of the bore with the piston. This centers the ring. Check the "ring-gap" with a feeler gauge. Move the ring up to where the ridge is, or was, and check the gap. You can use this to determine wear. Circumference is 3.1416 x Diameter. It takes some math but it works reasonably well in a pinch. I have also seen people buy oversize piston rings and file the gaps to the specifications and the engines ran beautifully. But there is a LIMIT! A good machinist is a highly skilled trade that takes years of schooling or experience.
