Walked in the Charleston, SC bridge walk Saturday. It's 6.2 miles including up and down a 160 foot high bridge. Mrs. KEH, another lady and I were averaging about 20 minutes per mile. Not bad for people in their late 60's. On the drive down Friday a lot of farmers were planting corn. Some of it was no till, some normal tillage, some appeared to be a mixture. Some corn was up about 2 inches high. There were a number of center pivots along the way. Dont know if they use wells or pump from swamps or ponds, maybe both. The Low Country of SC is mostly a coastal plain that was once under the ocean. Much of it is as flat as Allan in NE's farm. but you can't see very far because there are trees along a swamp or stream or in a pine plantation. Some areas of pine trees were or had been controlled burned to kill the underbrush, small trees, and insects that attack big trees. The big new tractors I saw in the fields were all green. I know there is a red dealer not too far to the North of where I was. Went by one blue dealer on the way. Looks like the boys are going to plant as much corn as possible. Some cotton fields along the way that had not been plowed. Not time to plant cotton, its very sensitive to cool weather. Some small grain about a foot high. Needs rain. Getting light rain here in western SC now. KEH

It increased the farm productivity and, in general, made life easier because more work could be done with this 'mechanical beast'. My dad dreamed that some day he would have his own tractor with every implement he could get. When he rea
