This may be too late to do you any good, but yesterday I was thinking about you strange alternator problem and did a little checking with the guts of a 10SI alternator, to see what could make the #1 excite regulator terminal hot with the engine not running.
I found that a shorted positive diode in the rectifier assy will feed battery power from the BAT stud, through the shorted diode,through the diode trio,to the regulator brush terninal and out the #1 exciter terminal.
They sold you an alternator with a defective rectifier assy.
