It's not a matter of early versus late, it's a matter of version and horsepower output. You can take just about any head from any 6.5 and swap it to another 6.5 or an older 6.2 - and vice-versa. From the factory - turbo 6.5s had one version of an assembled head for the Vin-code F engines, and another to fit the Vin-code P and S engines. The precombustion-chambers differ depending on horsepower levels. The bigger the pre-cup, the more power potential when used with more fuel and boost - and also slightly less efficiency without it. Also, some newer heads got beefed up. As far as I know - the best heads on the market right now - and the cheapest - are made in China - and weigh around 4 lbs. more each then the original heads GM used. You can buy new bare castings for around $185 each - or complete assembled heads for around $300 each. The new Chinese heads come with hardened intake and exhaust valve seat-inserts too. You can also put these new 6.5 turbo heads onto any 6.2 back to the first-year engines made in 1982. The 6.2/6.5 engine series got changed to short injectors early 90s and the later heads have the injectors mounted at a slightly different angle - but it's no big deal. Last set of new 6.5 heads I put onto an 83 6.2 - I had to bend the injector lines a little bit, to match the new angle. I suspect if you went to GM and ordered new heads - or International-Remy - they would be selling you Chinese heads - reboxed.

After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion. After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
