Steve... You might be right about the cost of buying most implements as opposed to making them. There are a few major exceptions however. Equipment that insurance underwriters feel is dangerous is absurdly expensive and can be made quite less expensively in many cases. (Of course it might also be inherintly more dangerous than the equipment that comes from the manufacturer requiring much more in the line of common sense while using) I found this when I was looking for a logging winch, I made one for about 1/10 the cost of new...1/8 the cost of used. The other exception is stuff you can make from stuff you get for free or real cheap....I rubber neck constantly while driving the backroads...many times people are happy to get rid of something if you only haul it away. Just getting a PTO shaft from a 50 year old rusted apart implement can save you a couple hundred dollars :-) I agree with Doug that just the joy of building stuff makes it worthwhile...I just finished making a really cool trencher....It twisted like a pretzel the first time I tried to drag it through a root...back to the drawing board :-) Good Luck Kim
