First off, thanks to all you guys for the advice, your all the greatest. I advanced the timing as suggested here & after running it for about 10 minutes, I guess for the rings to start to seat, 3 out of the 4 cylinders quit smoking. The 4th cylinder is still smoking white & heavy diesel fuel smell. For those who havent followed all my posts on this project, this is a 69 Case 580CK 188D. I put new head, pump, injectors, sleeves, pistons & rings & used a dial indicator to set TDC, gearing & pump timing etc. I set the valvetrain also. Might it take a while for this last cylinder's rings to seat? I only ran it for 10 minutes but that was long enough for the other 3 cylinders to quit smoking. If I retard it, they all smoke so now its advanced by about 4 fuel pump timing line widths which I heard each line width is 2 degrees. It was 35*F & it would not start at all until I warmed it up w/ lights under blankets. Will it start easier in the cold once I run it for a day & the ring by then should be fully seated?
Thanks again
Jim

Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo. ... [Read Article]
