Jim, Diesels smoke white when cold, if all is well, run it for an hour or so, you need to get it up to op temp, best warmed up under light load. It is going to take awhile to seat everything especially at those temps, let it run! Also I've found that if I don't have some type of pre heater, (glowplugs, thermostart, starting fluid system) I use a hair dryer, right in the air intake. I don't advocate starting fluid unless it specifically states that it is a recomended method in the operating manual, some JD commercial equipment that I've worked on had it factory installed, otherwise the hairdryer worked well.
