I figured up what I would have charged for the labor side of the deal and it would have been $160 so $185 wouldn't have been out of line. There is too much variation in used tires to comment on that price. Looks clear to me that either there was an misunderstanding on the phone or he decided to take advantage of you. Without a written agreement there is no way to know for sure. The question now is what to do? You can try to talk again about it and I would recommend doing it face to face not on the phone or email. Also if you could do it when are other customers listening it would be to your advantage. Don't let him get you into his office by yourself, settle it with witnesses. If there isn't any give then you can either pay it or not. If you have the money I would recommend paying it just for your own piece of mind. If he makes a habit of this I would say he won't be in business long. In this end of the tire business there is a limited number of potential customers and we have to have repeat customers. Of course you said you "helped". There have been times I have wanted to charge extra because the owner "helped". Next time insist on paying for the job when it is done and look at the bill before he starts. But remember there may be some surprises that cause more work that may need to be added to the total.
