What we have here is a failure to communicate. I am saying that aroung here most hay is coastal bermuda. You need to weed spray at least every other year to keep weeds down. You have to fertlize every year to get decent quality hay. You need to run an aerator over it, every year or every other year, depending on soil compaction to keep the stand thick and growing. Sometimes you have to shred it with rotary cutter to knock down weeds. So if you add all that up, then pay 18 to 20 per round bale 4X5 for custom baling - - there is now way you can even break even at 25 per bale. Most folks here get 40 or more per 4X5 bale of coastal. Most folks only feed 4 to 5 round bales per winter per mother cow. AT 40 per bale times 5 bales, you would have 200 expense wintering per head, or about 1/3 of the calf price. Diferent palces, different practices. You must have to feed an awful lot of hay in the northern winters. I am in North Central Texas. Here we also graze fall planted small grains; wheat or oats. Gives cows and calves good protein and really helps out on the amount of hay. Tom
