I've been there and done that several times with a 584 and a 454. Remove the sheet metal directly in front of the shift linkages. It would be directly behind your left foot, a vertical piece. You'll see where the two shifter levers enter the transmission. One of those needs to be forced backwards to the rear of the tractor. I can't remember which one, if it was the inside or outside lever, but it doesn't take much guessing. You'll definitely know when you've got it slid back into place, and the trans will work fine after that.
