An "honest 34 MPG" is an oxy-moron. It never happened - and defies the laws of physics. Trucks with 5.9s and standard trans setups - if geared well usually get 19-22 MPG on the highway. Automatics without OD around 17-18 MPG. My neighbor has an 89 he's had since new with auto and it gets a consistent 16.5 in this hilly area. My 92 with a five-speed manual and 3.50 axles gets up to 21 MPG, but 19 MPG highway is the usual average.
Your friend might be honest but also has wishful thinking and poor math skills. I know lots of honest people who post rediculous fuel mileage claims - especaily with diesels. I've had many opportunities to check, and when I did, none came close.
