I would start with a good tuneup. It may be flooding the engine after the engine is stopped is the reason you need to crank so much. You need to get a diagram of that fuel system to determine if there's a pressure regulator. I had to change the fuel pump on a Chevy with throttle body injection (TBI). The engine would just quit, but would always restart. Always thought it was a fuel problem, so I silver soldered a 1/8 pipe fitting on the steel fuel line from the filter to measure the fuel pressure. It had about 10 or 11 psi until I accelerated and the pressure dropped. Pulled the tank and pump and the pump sock was covered in rust & dirt. I cleaned the tank and installed a new pump.
