As Gene said the fenders from a cub will not fit, but the hood from a A will work on a B.
As for the serial number most I have seen did have a tag attached to the inside of the seat frame on the left side (next to the transmission).
Check the area around the #1 sparkplug, there should be a flat area about 1/2" high by 3" long that has the serial number stamped in it.
If the motor is orginal it should be the same as the tag on the seat frame or close. You may need to scrape the paint or dirt/grease off of it to be able to read it.
