Another thing adding to the fuel cost of running a rig is the reduced fuel milage obtained with the new emission requirements. I do not believe low sulpher fuel by it's self has reduced fuel economy but the emission controls, mandated by the government, on the newer diesels have reduced fuel economy by 20 to 25%.
I do not know how much carbon is produced by a gallon of diesel but I wonder how much if any total reduced carbon output we have actually gained if we are using 25% more fuel.
But what I really do not understand in these times of tight oil supplies is why the government would be so assinine as to impose regulations that will increase the demand for diesel when fuel economy should be the emphasis.
This "knee jerk feel good" country has got some hard times ahead of it if our government does not get it's head out of it's a**. Surcuming to "junk" science, "Al Gorasms" and the United Nations policy wonks has to end. Lack of common sense is taking us down a dirt road with no end in sight.
