Brown recluse "spider bites" can indeed be horrific. Unfortunately so can many other diseases and processes that can cause similar necrotizing lesions. Spider bites are often diagnosed based on little proof and frequently in most areas of this country where there are No documented colonies of this critter. Theoretically they could move anywhere where people move, however, lack of caution and overzealous diagnosing of "loxoscelism" can lead to misdiagnosis and potential delays in treatment of other underlying problems. We should be fatr more careful to positively I.D. these critters before adding further to the already immense folklore on the subject!
