Had a great neighbor about 25 years ago, when I was still trying to farm. Older fella, retired, great mechanic. Always brought stuff back in better shape than he got it, never complained. Replaced the clutch in my Oliver 550 once. One time he was using my baler, and when I came by his place on my way home from work, it looked like a yard sale- baler parts everywhere! I drove in, and he came up with a big grin, and said "It ain't as bad as it looks! We've got it comin' our way now, we're puttin' it back together!" Seems that a couple teeth had broken out on the main gear- probably just metal fatigue, from hitting the same teeth on the plunger stroke for upteen years. He had an old crony who was a machinist and welder- they built it up with weld, ground it down, and did such a good job that about the only way to find it was the bluing of the hot metal. I had been doing hay for a couple guys in the neighborhood, so when I quit, I just let Charlie do it with my equipment. He'd bring me some money once in awhile, and would have been hurt if I didn't take it. I finally got even- when we moved away from the neighborhood, I took the baler and rake over and left them, and would never give him a price to buy them. I went to his funeral last week- died at 90. One of the best guys I ever knew.
