In 1857, when wood was the primary source of heat, a firewood dealer in North Omaha was having trouble with pilferage from his lot. He took about twenty pieces of firewood, bored large holes down the center, filled theim with gunpowder, and hammered plugs into the ends of the holes.
He then stacked them on his lot where they could be easily swiped. When wood cook stoves in the neighborhood started blowing up at random, the pilferage stopped.
