Converting International Cub tractor from 6 to 12 volt

I recently boght an International Cub tractor. I had to replace the 6 volt battery. It ran for a couple of months, starting on it's own. However, recently I have had to jump the battery for it to start. I investigated the voltage regulator and found that the coils were burned. I know that these old tractors are sometimes positively grounded. The battery I removed was hooked up with a negative ground. How can I test to see which way is correct? Also I am interested in switching to a 12 volt system. What is involved and how can I find an alternator and starter that will fit my tractor mounts?
