Gary or someone in the area: My daughter is going to Iowa City, IA while working as an intern at the Univ. med school. She has a fairly new 2 wd car and is worried about getting around in the snow and the effect of salt on the car. She is thinking about getting an older Southern vehicle with a good body and maybe be it still being in good enough shape to sell when she leaves. We are thinking 4wd small truck or SUV or a front wheel drive car. Do they still have studded tires up there? She is cool to the idea of putting on chains. They have told her the snow and salt season is about 6 months. Any advice will be appreciated.

We will be visiting her and seeing the sights. Noticed on the road map there is a farm museum south of IA City. May have a chance to eyeball some of you.

On another note, we just gor back from visiting her in Mobile, AL. Wettest city in the US and it didn't rain there last week. We drove down through south GA and south AL. It is DRY. Farmers below Corlele, GA were planting crops in the dust, probably cotton, peanuts and soybeans. Some were running center pivots to get the crop up which is bad. I'm sure those guys would rather see that expensive system sit idle. I think they have wells but I did notice one place with 2 or 3 ponds in line, all full. I don't think they are going overboard on corn, though west of Bainbridge, GA there was corn a foot high. Near Bainbridge there is a sweet corn processing operation, their corn was waist high and tasseling. Obviously a special variety. They were watering it.
In spite of all the dry weather one guy managed to get an 8 wheel tractor stuck in what must have been the only marshy area of a large field. The area is coastal plain and rolling enough not to need tiling IMO.

Today's Featured Article - The Ferguson System Principal An implement cutting through the soil at a certain depth say eight inches requires a certain force or draft to pull it. Obviously that draft will increase if the implement runs deeper than eight inches, and decrease if it runs shallower. Why not use that draft fact to control the depth of work automatically? The draft forces are ... [Read Article]
