You said it ran good a short time ago, so compression shouldn't,I didn't say couldn't, be the problem. To narrow your thnking down on why it won't start without getting into detail of all componets, you only have to have three things to make it run, compression, gas, and spark. Lets skip over the compression to start with and go to gas. You had the carb apart so you need to chack that you don't have air leaks that will keep the gas from being pulled into the engine, also take the gas line off at the carb and check the flow. Now for the spark, make sure your getting spark at all plugs. I have done this by calmping all of the plugs to a 1/8" flat bar and clamping the bar to the engine for the ground, putting the plug wires on and watch the spark at each plug. I drove a 8n mowing road sides one summer in the 50's and that one had a cronic problem of the points sticking on the pin. I would have to take the distributor cap off and put a dorp of oil from the dip stick on the pin and work the points open and closed. I was a kid and they told me I would have to do this and it worked. Good luck, It will run!

It is sometimes used so well you can't tell its there and other times used as a sloppy quick fix. Finding where and how it can be used correctly is key to whether you are using it as an "inelegant hack" or an integral solution to difficult and expens
