Tom, The first thing I would do is look at the gear ratio tag in the rear end of that truck. unless it is geared very low, like 3.50, 3.73 or 4.11. I dont know if it will ever save enough to pay for an overdrive( like gear vendors etc.) also those engines were not set up to lug at low rpm. I would check the vacuum advance and the carb power valve to make sure they are working. Both are common failures on Ford engines that are that old. normal on these trucks was 10-15 mpg If either the vac advance or power valve are blown mileage will be half of normal. Others who have owned the late 70's 351 say they pull like a 302 and drink fuel like a 460, But then compared to the cost of a new one, poor mileage on that 79 might not be so bad. Jon H

After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion.
