Have a shot at a 79 F250 with 351 auto. Body is real good, fuel mileage atrocious. Has anybody ever put in an auxialiary transmission backwards to provide more economy or would this happen? Or are there commercial units available to provide overdrive and does anybody think it's worth doing? I'll be dipped if I'm going to blow 30 grand on a stripped half-ton that gets cruddy mileage. While in England years ago saw Ford Transits all over the place. Ten foot flat decks carrying at least a ton at 60 mph on highways. Then saw one with the engine open and it was 4 cylinder Ford diesel. Guy claimed he got 35 to 40 mpg with a 6 speed manual. Sorry for the run-on but have been wondering about this. Tom
