I've often wondered who really made many of the tractor engines from say the 40's and 50's tractors. For example, I know that Continental engines were used in many Massey Harris tractors then and nobody was pretending that they weren't, eg. 101's, 20's, etc. Then other models of Masseys (eg. 33's, 44's, etc.) were said to be Massey's 'own' but were actually also made by Continental. Engines like Hercules and Chrysler showed up in various tractor brands as well. Now I'm sure John Deere actually made their own at their own plant, but how about others like IH, Allis, Case, Ford, etc. etc. Did any of these makes get outside vendors to make their engines for them? Which ones actually did make their own? Let me know what you know.
