I would say that it varies from tractor to tractor. Often, when a new tractor came out, the manufacturer would use a third-party engine at first, switching to their own later. The John Deere L (mentioned below) is a good example. Also, Allis with the WD-45 diesel, use d a Budda engine (and then bought out Budda). I know for a fact that my Dad's 1947 Oliver 88 has a Continental engine it as did many Cockshuts and White (who bought out both Oliver and Cockshut). Many manufactures used the early 2-cycle GM engines (know as Screaming Jimmys) because they were a powerful (for their size) small diesel engine. Perkins, of course, teamed up with Massey Ferguson starting in the early 60's and I think even today Massey doesn't make their own engine. Deere was probably the "truest" to their own engines, but they had exceptions too. Interesting topic. Tim
