Our '72 F-100 with the 360 would rattle on 87 octane but would run right on 92 octane. It seems like it had something like 9.2:1 compression ratio or thereabouts. Some people back a few years would retard the spark to cope with lower octane, but that makes the motors run doggy. Our Massey 50 doesn't mind 87 octane at all. Not with about 6.5 c/r. I think Oliver was about the only mft that toyed with higher c/r for tractors, and I don't think they went too high for their production engines. If you're gonna use an older engine a lot with lead-free you might consider some sort of lead additive. But that gets into another discussion.
