Stocks collapsed quite a bit after that day if you recall. Money went everywhere but people's pockets, that's for sure. I don't believe this has anything to do with the current issues in the economy.

The world trade center collapse caused the loss of billions of dollars worth in property value (PLUS PRICELESS LIVES), and ruined speculator hopes in the market for the occupants of the center. This produced an immediate effect, and the economy MAY still be affected by 9/11 (I doubt it), but no one seems to be helping the economic situation in light of recent events.
